A perfect blend of brains, brawn and entrepreneurial spirit has made Food Services one of our most successful programs. The senior dining program has the Ocean State's only heart-healthy menu.

All programs are directed by Larry Coughlin, an alum of Rhode Island College, where he received a bachelor degree in business management. He managed restaurants for 20 years before joining Westbay three years ago, and oversees a staff of 30.

Kitchen Manager Jean Keane started in Westbay's food services eight years ago as a line cook, and now deftly runs the busy kitchen and continues to do much of the delicious cooking and baking. Her cookies are a favorite!

The food program provides a variety of food security services for residents of Kent County, including Emergency Food, USDA commodities, Westbay Marketplace, Westbay Community Garden, Senior Dining, Children's Center, Serve New England Food Co-op and catering.

Coughlin plans and updates menus monthly, constantly balancing the food preferences of diners who want to indulge themselves and those who are very health-conscience. Menus feature frozen or fresh foods, unprocessed meats and poultry, low salt, high fiber, very few gravies and nothing fried. All soups and sauces are made from scratch, and recipes are always tested and tried before being served. Many ethnic dishes are served, with Italian being the most popular.

Catering Services

Westbay is lucky to have its own catering service for events, and it is available to the public as well, for graduations, convocations, award dinners and fundraisers. A custom menu is created based upon the host's requests. Events can be held during the day, and possibly evenings and weekends.
